Little Shop of Horrors always makes me think of a post-exam summer, student friends, a then-not-even-girlfriend-let-alone-wife and Adrian Johns‘s champagne drunk out of pint glasses with the dawn breaking over Benet Street and John Lee Hooker playing in the background. I am thus fond of it.
I don’t think I would be any fonder of it if it had had the spectacular ending that Frank Oz originally envisaged. But here it is on YouTube for us all to relish. The section above is the final bit; the first part is the demise of Audrey, the second part is the late great Levi Stubbs doing mean green mother and the demise of Seymour.
This version of the ending has only previously been seen on a DVD released in 1998 and then quickly withdrawn. Accounts of the ending’s suppression differ, and it’s not clear to me whether this black and white version is as good as it ever got, whether a better version was lost in a fire or whether something wonderful is sitting in David Geffen’s vault awaiting final release.
